Otto Warmbier died today of complications of a North Korea journey.
He had to die.
Was he going to made a hero? No.
Was he going to become an advocate against dictatorial regimes? No.
Was he going to remain in comatose for an undetermined amount of time? Adding media attention on increasingly bold and untouchable North Korea? No.
He simply had to die.
That's politically what made the most sense.
Conceptually his family had to protect him. They failed to harness Otto's death wish.
Any American who visits North Korea has a death wish. Like young men his age it's common.
Not all of them end up in North Korea. But traveler's with death wish can easily find their way in perilous situations that can turn fatal on a dime.
