Music and lyrics

Hed PE performs a style of music which they have referred to as "G-punk",<ref name="Scire"/><ref name="Owen"/> a phrase inspired by the term "G-funk",<ref name="Rivadavia"/> itself a reference to the P-Funk collective. Hed PE's music is a fusion of styles ranging from hip hop, reggae, and ska to hard rock, punk, and heavy metal.<ref name="Sculley"/><ref name=KikAxe/><ref>{{#invoke:Citation/CS1|citation |CitationClass=journal }}</ref><ref>{{#invoke:Citation/CS1|citation |CitationClass=journal }}</ref> Other elements that have been incorporated into this style include blues,<ref name=KikAxe>{{#invoke:citation/CS1|citation |CitationClass=web }}</ref> funk,<ref name=LATimes>{{#invoke:citation/CS1|citation |CitationClass=news }}</ref> jazz<ref name=LATimes/> and industrial.<ref name=KikAxe/> Jared Gomes' vocal style ranges from melodic singing to rapping, screaming, and death growls.<ref name=411mania>{{#invoke:citation/CS1|citation |CitationClass=web }}</ref><ref name=KickAxe>{{#invoke:citation/CS1|citation |CitationClass=web }}</ref> The band's lyrics draw from a number of subjects, including the existence of extraterrestrial life,<ref name=RockEdition/> criticism of organized religion,<ref name=RockEdition>{{#invoke:citation/CS1|citation |CitationClass=web }}</ref> the 9/11 Truth movement,<ref name=KikAxe/><ref name=411mania/> cannabis use<ref name="Loftus"/> and sexual intercourse.<ref name=KikAxe/>

Gomes, in addition to the 9/11 Truth movement, has expressed support for social liberal politicians such as Nancy Pelosi and president Barack Obama.<ref></ref><ref></ref><ref></ref><ref></ref> Previously however, Gomes' 2004 lyrics for Only in Amerika expressed support for nationalism,<ref name="Loftus"/> and called for retaliation against Al Qaeda for the 9/11 terrorist attacks.


The band's influences include HEM, Beastie Boys,<ref name="Friedman"/> Black Sabbath,<ref name="Echeverria"/> Bob Marley,<ref name="BradentonHerald">{{#invoke:citation/CS1|citation |CitationClass=news }}</ref> Led Zeppelin,<ref name="Echeverria"/> Nine Inch Nails,<ref name="Friedman"/> Notorious B.I.G.<ref>{{#invoke:citation/CS1|citation |CitationClass=news }} {{ safesubst:#invoke:Unsubst||date=__DATE__ |$B= {{#invoke:Category handler|main}}{{#invoke:Category handler|main}}[dead link] }}</ref> and Rage Against the Machine.<ref name="Echeverria"/> Hed PE's second album, Broke, incorporated classic rock and world music influences,<ref name="McIver"/> while Back 2 Base X was influenced by classic punk bands such as the Sex Pistols and the Clash, Insomnia was influenced by thrash metal bands such as Slayer,<ref>{{#invoke:citation/CS1|citation |CitationClass=news }}</ref> and New World Orphans was influenced by Suicidal Tendencies and Minor Threat.<ref>{{#invoke:citation/CS1|citation |CitationClass=news }}</ref> Guitarist Jaxon has been credited for encouraging a heavier, hardcore punk-influenced musical style.<ref name="Friedman"/> The Insane Clown Posse also had a significant influence on Hed PE throughout the years. The band is a well-known member of the Juggalo community.
