Radio 1 provides alternative genres after 7:00 pm, including electronic dance, hip hop, rock, indie or interviews. It is aimed primarily at the 15–29 age group,<ref>{{#invoke:citation/CS1|citation |CitationClass=web }}</ref> although the average age of the UK audience in 2008 was 33.<ref>{{#invoke:citation/CS1|citation |CitationClass=news }}</ref>

It is the only national radio station that has more variety on its music playlists than The Hits Radio and Capital FM and showcases a mix of music in the daytime.
