Montreal was named a UNESCO City of Design.<ref name="UNESCO">{{#invoke:citation/CS1|citation |CitationClass=web }}</ref><ref name="Monocle">{{#invoke:citation/CS1|citation |CitationClass=news }}</ref> Historically the commercial capital of Canada, it was surpassed in population and economic strength by Toronto in the 1970s.
