Mötley Crüe is an American rock band formed in Los Angeles, California on January 17, 1981.<ref>{{#invoke:citation/CS1|citation |CitationClass=web }}</ref><ref name="MC AMG">{{#invoke:citation/CS1|citation |CitationClass=web }}</ref><ref name="LA Times">{{#invoke:citation/CS1|citation |CitationClass=web }}</ref> The group was founded by bassist Nikki Sixx and drummer Tommy Lee, who were later joined by guitarist Mick Mars, and vocalist Vince Neil. The members of the band have often been noted for their hedonistic lifestyles and the persona they maintained. Following its hard rock and heavy metal origins, with the third album Theatre of Pain (1985) the band joined the first wave of glam metal.<ref>{{#invoke:citation/CS1|citation |CitationClass=book }}</ref><ref>{{#invoke:citation/CS1|citation |CitationClass=web }}</ref> Their ninth studio album, Saints of Los Angeles, was released on June 24, 2008, and was certified Gold in January 2012. The band has embarked on a final tour, and is set to retire at the end of 2015.
