The 1870 articles of incorporation for the Standard Oil Company

The "Articles of Incorporation" (sometimes also referred to as the Certificate of Incorporation or the Corporate Charter) act as a charter to establish the existence of a corporation in the United States and Canada, and are filed with Secretary of State, or other company registrar.

An equivalent term for LLCs in the United States is the Articles of Organization. For terms with similar meaning in other countries, see articles of association.
