(2E,6E)-farnesyl diphosphate <math>\rightleftharpoons</math> (E)-alpha-bisabolene + diphosphate

This synthase requires a divalent cation cofactor (Mg²⁺ or, to a lesser extent, Mn²⁺) to neutralize the negative charge of the diphosphate leaving group.
