Helin at the Palomar Observatory in San Diego County, California, on May 8, 1991.<ref>{{#invoke:citation/CS1|citation |CitationClass=web }}</ref> The asteroid was named in 2012 after John B. Mckay, and was discovered in 2010 to have a small moon around it, orbiting the asteroid every 2.300 ± 0.001 hours.<ref name=binary/>
